ENIn the traditional residential architecture historiography the question of “other” was not dealt with, and the traditional architecture itself in Lithuania was always investigated as Lithuanian ethnic group’s cultural tradition, in such a way eliminating for a long time living in Lithuania ethnic groups and their cultural identity. After the changes in the social, political and cultural conditions in Lithuania and the world, the “other” is increasingly becoming the subject of research, however, it seems that the prevalence of cultural pluralism and the decline of traditionalism make it difficult to recognize not only the “other”, but also ”our own”. So our aim is to find out and compare what is “own” and what is “other” in historiography related to the traditional residential architecture in Lithuania and the author’s ethnographic field research during which architects and homeowners were interviewed.
