Summary / Abstract:

ENThe imagery of Lithuanian and Latvian ethnic musical Instruments are clear according to the shapes of the instruments and the sound that one creates with them. Wild animals, animals, fish, and boats are imitated in their shapes, while the sounds are imagined as the chirping of birds, the bellowing and bleating of animals, sounds of nature, and crying of children. That could mean the remains of the primordial thought of the conscious – with the musical instruments functioning as totem poles. A hypothesis is raised, based on the imagery of the instruments and their similarities, that hunting and fishing must have been the basis of the of the ancient Lithuanian and Latvian forefathers‘ farming activities and cultural overlapping, which is different from the dominant opinion about the cultural links between the ancient Balts concerning animal husbandry and agriculture. This is why the origins of our nations‘ beginnings and ethic history most likely lie in the particularly early stages of the settlement of Northern Europe.
