ENThe purpose of the study is to examine relationship between adolescents’ future orientations (future goals, fears and cognitive strategies) and academic achievement. The subjects were 391 adolescents of the age 14-17. The subjects filled in the Hopes and Fears Questionnaire (Nurmi, Poole, Seginer, 1992). Their cognitive and attributional strategies were assessed using the Strategy and Attribution Questionnaire (Nurmi, Salmela-Aro, Haavisto, 1995). The results showed that the high and normal academic achievement groups are more oriented to education than the low academic achievement gruop. The high and normal academic achievement groups showed more active future orientation than the low academic achievement group. The goals and fears of high and normal academic achievement groups are more socially oriented. The goals and fears of low academic achievement group are more self oriented. High academic achievement group apply more functional cognitive strategies in an achievement context than normal and low academic achievement groups. High and normal academic achievement groups apply more functional cognitive strategics in an affi- liativc context then low academic achievement group. Multiple regression analysis revealed positive association between academic achievement and gender, master orientation in an achievement context, success expectation in an affiliative context.
