Alternative Title:
On developmental changes of comprehension of story character’s emotional state
Summary / Abstract:

ENThe present exploratory study investigates how children understand emotional states of protagonist while they are reading natural literary text. A total of 66 children, consisting of second-, third- and forth graders and 22 university students participated in this study. They were given the short story of B. Vilimaite “Ice-rink musik”, in which the narrative is dominated by “a landscape of action“ (J. Bruner, 1986). The text was devided into 7 separate parts and presented piece by piece. After reading each part participants were asked to describe how the story character felt and their reasons for this inference. It was found, that technically almost all children were able to name emotional state of the character in each part and meaningfully explain the reasons of these states. Qualitative analysis of responses revealed some developmental differences, which are dicus- sed in the context of text comprehension.
