Leidinys parengtas pagal 1011 m. gegužės 12-13 i Vilniuje vykusios tarptautinės konferencijos Art During Two World Wars pranešimus. Baltarusijos, D. Britanijos, Čekijos, Estijos, JAV, Latvijos, Lietuvos, Rusijos ir Vengrijos dailės istorikai nagrinėja specifinę karo metų dailę, jos funkcionavimą skirtingose šalyse. Straipsniai apima platų tematikos lauką - okupuotų kraštų dailės tendencijas; meninio gyvenimo ypatumus; ideologijos ir propagandos poveikį dailei; ikonografinių karo tematikos įvaizdžių formavimąsi; dailininkų laikyseną, kūrybą ir likimus; meno ir architektūros paveldo apsaugą destrukcijos sąlygomis; urbanistikos pokyčius.
