ENThe paper deals with the popular names of plants, which are presented in Lithuanian Botanical Dictionary //Lith: Lietuviškas botanikos žodynas and which are used in the dialect of Northern panevėžiškiai. G. Petkevičaitė-Bitė adduced such fitonims to Lithuanian Botanical Dictionary from Joniškėlis parishes (Pasvalys region) and Smilgiai (Panevėžys region). She noted more than 100 terms. P. Višinskis was a good friend of Petkevičiai family, often visited them in summer holidays and he induced G. Petkevičaitė to collect such. linguistic and ethnographical facts. Not all of Petkevičaitės’ fixed fitonims are reliable. Part of them are inaccurately transposed to standard language (e. g. brončiukas, parstupas). Some of the names can be interpreted as possible correction mistakes (e. g. jąvorėlis, nadatkas, šarkakojėlės). The geography of such names as kiaulažolė, liaukažolė, roputei šašoklis is doubtful. According to dictionary materials such fitonims are not used in the dialect of Northern panevėžiškiai. But the main part of Petkevičaitės’ recorded names (about 56 %) are reliable. The paper analyses one-word suffixal fitonims, the motivation of which depends on the form of leaves, fruits or raceme. In most cases their form is compared with well known attributes of surroundings. [From the publication]
