ENLithuania became the first republic to break away from the Soviet Union, by proclaiming the restoration of its pre-war independence. This article explores how independence declaration and subsequent events were reflected in the US press. In 1990, Lithuania was covered by all major newspapers, such as "The New York Times", "The Washington Post", "The Wall Street Journal". Lithuania's political situation drew attention of the most prominent political commentators and journalists. The Lithuanian-American community worked hard to get positive publicity on the issue, followed the US press, collected and preserved publications about Lithuania. Now these collections of press publications are stored at the National Library of Lithuania. As the Baltic states were often mentioned together, the archival collections may be useful for researchers interested in Baltic diaspora activities and its role in achieving independence for Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
