ENAndrzej Ignacy Ogiński (1740-1787), son of Trakai Voivode Tadeusz Franciszek Ogiński (1712-1783) and Izabela Katarzyna Radziwiłł (1711-1761), entered history of the Polish-Lithuanian state as one of dignitaries and diplomats of the late eighteenth- century Grand Duchy of Lithuania, commissioned for a diplomatic mission by Stanisław August in a complicated period of the Bar Confederation. In the course of the diplomatic missions in 1772 and 1774 Andrzej Ogiński was looking for the ways of rapprochement between the confederates of Bar and the monarch, and sought to gain concessions from the Court of Vienna in the process of partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. During the First Partition he was among those politicians that together with the King Stanisław August worked on the reform project of the "axed" state. A. Ogiński not only voiced his support for the reforms of the executive government, but also supported the idea of amplifying the rule of the monarch, restructuring of the government of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and abolition of the liberum veto right in the Sejm. In March of 1775, when the Permanent Council, a new institution of executive government of the Sejm, was established, A. Ogiński was elected its secretary. A year later he became Marshal of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of the Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In 1778 A. Ogiński was nominated Castellan of Trakai and after the death of his father became Voivode of Trakai. If political views of A. Ogiński, his attitude towards various political events and his economic activities had already merited attention from researchers, the cultural horizon of Trakai Voivode was not analysed, yet. Such opportunity of a glimpse into cultural environment of the noble is provided by archival documents.Among those would be the book catalogue of Andrzej Ogiński, preserved in the Ogiński foundation of the Lithuanian State Historical Archives. Important information on the library of his father and its books is provided by M. K. Oginski's complementary handwritten notes in the first volume of his 'Memoirs', recorded in 1828, and the remaining fragments of correspondence of Jean Rolay. The article, after analysis of information provided by this source and having discussed circumstances of the arrangement of library catalogues, attempts to reconstruct the repertoire of Andrzej Oginski's library, assembled in the 1780s, and through that to show the cultural horizon of the magnate. First part of the article presents the archival source: the three remaining lists of books (catalogues) and the role of its compiler, French pedagogue and bibliophile Jean Rolay, in arranging the library of A. Ogiński. The second part topically analyses the repertoire of books that were later added to the library, and the third part raises the question of fate of A. Oginski's library. The file, titled 'Catalogue of books in the library of Trakai Voivode Andrzej Ogiński, compiled by Jean Rolay', kept in the Ogiński foundation of the Lithuanian State Historical Archives, is not a list of the entire collection of books. The archival file has three lists-catalogues of books, compiled in different periods of time and listing a total number of registered books as 2214 items. Those are: 1) topical catalogue of books transferred by J. Rolay to A. Ogiński on 1 August 1781 (Cataloque des Livres cedes ä Son Excellence Monseigneur le Comte Andrė Oginski Castellan de Troki par Son trės humble et trės obeissant serviteurj. Rolay), containing titles of 1792 volumes of 633 books and periodicals; 2) undated list of books purchased by J. Rolay for A Ogiński (Livres achettės pour Monseigneur), containing 70 titles of publications.3) alphabetical catalogue of books J. Rolay transferred to the library of A. Ogiński on 1 January 1786 (Cataloque Alphabetique des Livres que M. Rolay a cedes des plein gre ä la Bibliotheque deS[on]. Excellence]. M[onseigneu]r Le Comte Ogiński Palatin de Troki Le 1er Janvier 1786), containing titles of 352 volumes of 237 publications. Books, transferred by J. Rolay, were added to A. Oginski's ample and continuously replenished library, the exact size of which by the number of items is yet unknown. The library was supplemented with 2214 volumes of ancient Greek and Latin poetry and literature labelled "modern" at the time, allowing to learn not only of the world of poetry, rhetoric and history, but also get familiarized with the most recent works in the areas of natural and exact sciences. The catalogue of books compiled by Jean Rolay opens a wide horizon of cultural, religious and scientific interests of the nobleman, allowing to note both his interest in collecting authors of classical works and his aims to learn through literature of the most recent ideas of the Enlightenment. Library of Trakai Voivode A. Ogiński was arranged maintaining standards of library science prevailing in Western Europe in the second half of the 18th century, and the most recent know-how of library science, using a topical-subject principle based on scientific classification established by encyclopaedists. To this day there is no exact data on the fate of A. Oginski's book collection. So, it is a topic awaiting the new research. [From the publication]
