Summary / Abstract:

Tokiu būdų, prievartinės tikybos fenomenas būdingas XVI a. pabaigos – XVII a. pradžios Biržų miestui.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Biržų kunigaikštystė; Lokalinis tapatumas; Konfesiniai santykiai; Religinė prievarta.

ENAt the beginning of the article, the author discusses the problem of confession in historiography, highlighting works of German researches. The Biržai county of the Radvila family is the most suitable location to analyse the religious state in the country. It is important to mention here that the Radvila family, who were the founders of the town, forced their subordinates to attend the sermons in evangelical Lutheran churches. Such an approach to the religious issue may be historiographically interpreted as a principle: ‘whose power those is the religion’ (cuius regio eius religio), or by saying that subordinates were not very religious people. The issue of religious tolerance in the lands of the Radvila family can be discussed in the following terms: 1) whether so much propagated religious tolerance could truly exist in reality? 2) Whether the given order to attend evangelical churches de jure was implemented de facto by subordinates, that is, whether fears about possible penalties for not attending them, were greater than the life-long tradition of people? Still, even though people were forced to listen to the Word, it did not mean they had to change their religion. The introduction of sermons in the Lithuanian language made the church closer to ordinary people and urged them to convert into the evangelical Lutheran faith. It can be concluded that a phenomenon of the imposed religion was characteristic to the town of Biržai in the end of the sixteen, beginning of the seventeen century.
