ENThe article presents the results of the field studies carried out in Punskas in 2013. The research aimed at explaining the construction of ethnical and national identity by the Lithuanians living in Poland. The Lithuanians living in Punskas constitute an adequate picture of overlapping ethnic and national identity and their interactions in the territories near the borders of countries. The basic theoretical assumptions were that frontier territories are the most sensitive in terms of the processes related to ethnicity and nationality. National and ethnic identities are the subjects of deep reflection and thought among the people living there. The results show that the Lithuanians living in Poland create their identity on the basis of their origin. Ethnical identity is handed down from generation to generation. Local identity, language, culture and citizenship are also very important factors. [From the publication]
