Summary / Abstract:

ENOn April 10, 1860, Mrs. Matilda Giunterytė-Bučinskienė donated a "cornice debris from the gate of the castle of Vilnius with the coat of arms of the Vases - a Cornfish" for the Vilnius Antiquities Museum and working with it Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission. The article attempts to explain the origin and fate of this gift. According to the Zygintas Butis data, who studied the history of M. Giunterytė-Bučinskienė VSM gift, most of the objects donated to the aristocrats museum were taken to the Rumiancevo Museum in Moscow. Therefore, we try to explore how to associate the information available in one whole about the cornice wreckage donated by M. Giunterytė-Bučinskienė with the the coat of arms from the gate of Vilnius Castle and a letter about a lamb sent to an unknown person from a similar puddle and a photograph from the photographic library of Jagiellonian University. It turned out that Count Gunther had broken wreckage with the the coat of arms of Vase in the collapsed gate of the Lower Castle of Vilnius, and kept them in his palace in Dabrivėnai in the Gothic House. A few years after Giunter's death, his daughter, M. Giunterytė-Bučinskienė, donated a wreckage to the VMA. It is further explained whether the photograph shows a gypsy copy of the wreckage and a donated coat of arms to the museum is one and the same thing and conclutions are made that the museum did not have the original of Lower Castle wreckage, but it could have been a copy of it. There are no inventory descriptions of the Lower Castle Palace in Vilnius and it is not known how much and from what materials the vase heroes were decorated with them. There are no inventory descriptions of the Lower Castle Palace in Vilnius and it is not known how much and from what materials the coat of arms of the vase were decorated. Both of the discussed sandstone wreckages with the coat of arms of Vase could decorate any of the early Baroque Lower Castle's exterior or courtyard gates.
