Summary / Abstract:

ENIn the 16th-18th centuries Vilnius publishing centres had a huge and, in many respects, determinant impact on the development of book art of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, including Belarus. Not only did they become its birthplace (Franciscus Skorina's printing house), but they also contributed to the formation of the structure of artistic decoration in the old printed Cyrillic books and elaboration of the main elements of their artistic organisation - title page, illustrations, headpieces, colophons, initials (the publishing houses of brothers Mamonich, Garaburda, the Holy Ghost fraternal society of Vilnius). For many Belarusian masters of book art Vilnius Academy printing house remained the place of their professional skills training and creative activity over a long period of time. Owing to the fact that the leading craftsmen of the time (including the ones from abroad) were working in the printing house it became one of the channels that let the new art style tendencies, graphic techniques and materials, iconographic canons and plots from Western Europe reach Belarusian bookwork. A significant part in the cultural and hystorical heritage of the Belarusian-Lithuanian frontier was also played by the publishing centres of Losk (where polemical works of Symon Budny were published) and Muravanaya Ashmyanka (where K. Dorohostajski finished his book „Hippica to jest o koniach księga“ with famous Т. Makowskis illustrations).
