Summary / Abstract:

ENThis essay contains a reconstruction of Adam Mickiewicz’s views on the origins of the Lithuanian language and the history and situation of Lithuania of the time which he presented in his lectures at the Collège de France between 1840-1844. The author of the essay presents Mickiewicz’s interpretation of the causes of Lithuania’s rise to power in the Middle Ages, his acceptance of arguments about the Indian origins of the Lithuanian language and nation, but he focuses on Mickiewicz’s views on the situation of the Lithuanians of the time– his lecture about it, in which he also expressed a high estimate of the spiritual life of the community, was closed by Mickiewicz with an ambiguous statement that it is “a people lying in wait”. The author tries to decipher the meaning of that statement by asking what scenarios of future events did Mickiewicz have in mind when he spoke of the Lithuanian people waiting for a new chapter in their history to open while simultaneously emphasising a mysterious connection between the Lithuanians and the Poles. Will the Lithuanians, asks the poet, support the Jagiellonian idea of renewing the Polish-Lithuanian union, or will they do the opposite, that is go down the road towards a sovereign and independent existence?.
