ENA constantly changing society, faced both with agricultural reforms and spiritual experiences, has created new tests for the expression of ethnic culture. The enthusiasm for folklore has decreased, folk bands have turned to recreational goals, and, finally, cosmopolitan folklorism has come into force, i.e. folk melodies are found in country, rock or pop music. Changes as well as the very content of musical education influence students’ musical culture. Often primary school students witness the clash, too important to be ignored of different cultures. The main object of the study is the contribution of musical education in primary school to ethnic culture. Particular attention in ethnic culture should be paid to pre-school education, when a child actively seeks self-expression; it is the period when the main foundations of world-view, values, ideals, views of things are being laid. Musical education is one of the most important conditions preserving and expanding the national ethnical heritage. The following two programmes can help us to a understand better the culture of musical education in primary school. They are the one provided by E. Velička and the other suggested by V. Krakauskaitė.While analysing the content of the musical education programme we paid a particular attention to the development of core values of ethnic culture in primary school by the means of folk songs, group work, games: 1. Love to animals an birds; 2. Love to plants; 3. Respect to close persons; homesickness; 4. The role of the Sun and the Moon in the lives of man and animals; 5. Diligence and friendliness; 6. Relations with other people, pleasant communication; 7. Respect to foreign people ant their culture; 8. Love to folklore, language; 9. Cherishing of festivals and customs. Having analysed the content of musical culture in primary school we came to the following conclusions: 1. A more natural way for a primary school child of understanding of his/her culture is the understanding of musical culture and the language. 2. Musical education programmes based on folklore are universal means of education. 3. Lithuanian folk songs, games form the core values of children. 4. The content of musical education comprises the laws of both nature and man, what is reflected in festivals, songs, and customs. 5. The content of musical education helps schoolchildren to understand better the values of the present and the past.
