ENIn this article we studied what losses children had experienced in the family and how it affected them. The research, done in 2003 with 91 primary school teachers included 1961 schoolchildren from 1st-4th grades. The data of the research showed that the main losses that schoolchildren experience are: parents ’ divorce, and parents’ life abroad earning more money. Schoolchildren, who faced their parents’ divorce, quarrels in the family and their parents’ unemployment, had personal peculiarities, such as incommunicativeness, higher emotional sensitiveness, and exaggerated need for care from others. The data of the survey confirms the theories by B. Perry (2001), R. Hilliard (2001), R.M. Berns (1989), V. Lepeskiene (2001), and others about the effect of loss on children. As for the possible ways of educational intervention to help such children, teachers choose an individual approach, and paying more attention. In conclusion it became obvious that the issue of the bereaved children in Lithuanian primary schools exists and that psycho-social conditions of such children, assessing their behavioral patterns, differ from those of children from nuclear/normal families.
