ENIn the context of the present work A. Juozaitis and A. Šliogeris are identified as "public intellectuals", i.e. intellectual persons who declare criticism of society and public opinion in a public and active manner. The focus of the analysis is the alternatives of public consciousness constructed by them. Discourses of philosophical traditions of Šliogeris and Juozaitis are different, and, in turn, possibilities of treating public society selected by them are also diverse. In the political range of forces Šliogeris supports liberals, and Juozaitis maintains moderately left political forces; paradigms of constructing and developing national and religious (homo catholicus) .consciousness are extremely critical for him. Linking different political forces these philosophers ground their theoretical baselines on similar philosophical traditions except for a few exemptions. The key of Juozaitis and Šliogeris’ positions is A. Camus and his absurd philosophy; another critical author is M. Heidegger and his highlighted perspective of authentic existence. The existential thought of Juozaitis through the accents of rebellion and decision-making, finally reaches the sphere of religious reality - "Phenomenon of Father Stanislovas", where the repetiton of transcendential movement made by the Šliogeris’ "free-man" becomes the foundation of religious and, in turn, national unity, and not the background of existence. This theoretical division also turns out to be the answer to different possibilities of constructing criticism of public opinion and civic consciousness.
