Summary / Abstract:

ENKarolis Reisonas (1894-1981) is a Latvian origin, educated at the Petersburg Civil Engineering Institute. He has worked in Lithuania as the chief engineer and the head of Municipal Construction Department in Šiauliai (1922-1930), in Kaunas (1930-1938) and Panevėžys. He was occupied by the private practice also. From 1950 Reisonas lived in Australia, there he worked as an architect of the Department of Works, Commonwealth of Australia (from 1973 - Department of Housing and Construction). During his creative career K. Reisonas had projected a variety of buildings: banks, residential houses, schools, churches, hospitals, cinemas and entities of economic-manufacturing purpose. The edifices, designed by K. Reisonas, are characterized by a functionally rational indoor plan, a wide facade stylistic diversity. At the beginning of his career, Reisonas diversified forms of historicism peculiar to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. These were Mr. Frenkelis house with a cinema “Spindulys” (not remained), the school dormitory of the community “Viltis”, houses of K. Venclauskas, V. Vaitkus and St. Pocius in Šiauliai. In Kaunas K. Reisonas projected buildings of all kinds of stylistic directions. The Rectory of Kaunas Priest Seminary and Archbishop and Metropolitan Palace have features of Neo-Baroque and Neoclassicism forms. In this town, he created expressive buildings of modernism architecture: Agriculture Bank, the Church of Resurrection of Christ, and Reformed Evangelical Church. The hospitals in Jurbarkas and Tauragė, as well as Pasvalys School of Commerce, projected by Reisonas - are important to the Lithuanian architectural history also. Such a stylistic diversity was not a wandering on the creative road, but rather the respect for an architectural context, future building user, and his taste.
