ENThe purpose of the study is to present the history of Orthodox monasteries in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th century before signing the Union of Brest, depict specificity and cultural role of monasteries in the GDL, changes in monastic life occurring in the 16th century, as well as a role of the monasteries in the history of Orthodox Church in the whole Republic of Poland. [...] The book consists of three chapters. The first one describes the beginning of monasticism and its development until the end of the 15th century within the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. [...] Chapter two discusses widely a financial and organizational state of monasticism in the GDL until the end of the 16th century. [...] The third chapter is devoted to a culture-forming role of Orthodox monasteries in the GDL. The chapter analyzes a role of the monasteries in the history of development of the cult of icons and the cult of saints. [...] Moreover, contacts of monastic groups with external visitors (mainly from the territory of ancient Byzantium) and the struggle of these groups for the preservation of religions identity in the face of a changing denominational situation, particularly towards the end of the 16th century, have been widely discussed. Orthodox monasteries in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the first half of the 16th century played an important spiritual or culture-forming role. They were well organized and increased their economic status thanks to numerous magnate and noble grants. In the second half of the 16th century we deal with a progressing crisis of monastic life in the GDL reflecting, however, general crisis of the Orthodox Church in the Republic of Poland. A considerable majority of the monasteries funded in the 16th century survived as long as the conclusion of the Union of Brest. [From the publication]
