ENEdward Materski was born in 1923 in Vilnius. After his father's death the family moved to Warsaw, where in 1940 he began his seminary studies at secret lectures. He continued the studies at the Higher Theological Seminary in Kielce. In 1947 he was ordained a priest, In 1968, Pope Paul VI appointed him suffragan bishop of the Diocese of Kielce. In 1981, Pope John Paul II moved him to the Diocese of Sandomierz, which in the same year was renamed the Diocese of Sandomierz-Radom. In 1992 he was appointed ordinary bishop of the newly created Diocese of Radom. He carried out pastoral, social and investment activity. During the period of Soviet rule, he visited Vilnius illegally. In Radom he established the Society of Friends of Vilnius "Gate of Dawn". He was the initiator of replica sanctuary the Mother of God of Gale of Dawn in Skarżysko-Kamienna, which has become a place of pilgrimage for worshippers from Poland and abroad. He was one of the eminent personalities of the most recent history of the Polish Roman-Catholic Church.
