ENThe name of Eliyahu, the Gaon of Vilna 1720-1797, one of the greatest spiritual and intellectual leaders of Jewry in Modem times, was well known in the Jewish circles, in the Northern region of the "large" Polish kingdom. The news of his greatness reached the intelligentsia of Poland. It is no wonder that out of respect and curiosity a young Polish artist, a student at the University of Vilna whose name is unknown, prepared a pencil drawing of the face of Eliyahu which formed the basis for a later oil painting of the Gaon [p. 164].
