ENOn the basis of the French theorist Paul Ricoeur, German historian and theorist of historiography Jörn Ruthenians, American literary scholars Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson, Russian cultural, literary historian Yuri Lotman and Georges Foulet French literary theoretical insights, in this article is discussed the category of memory, it's functions and transformations in Lithuanian memoirs. In works of these scientists the ratio of releasing opposition memory types (natural, involuntary, creative, autobiographical, individual memory - artificial, factual, informative, historical, collective memory) in memoir texts varies depending on the discourse strategies selected by the author. Two memoirs discourse Strategies are more analyzed - a historical-cultural and artistic-aesthetic. These discourses are oppositional, both according to the author's intentions and in terms of the memory function and expression. In memoirs of Merkelis Račkauskas, Julija Biliūnienė-Matjošaitienė there is the conspituous dominant of historical and cultural memory, or remembering like action. Here, the historical context of the time, the cultural environment of the individual and the social whole relationship is crucial. Conceptual material selection and grouping, intentions related not only to own individual meaning to existence, but also with moments of a certain debt to the history, culture, people. Meanwhile in memoir prose of Judita Vaičiūnaitė is dominating a natural, involuntary, creative memory or recollection as an image. Here the intention of restoring or recalling the past is less important than the act of communication with the reader here and now, regardless of the time distance. [From the publication]
