Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article focuses on the contemporary children’s folklore genre of “sadistic verses”. “Sadistic verse” is a short comic destructive poem where the main character is a child who gets himself in a dangerous situation and in consequence looses his life. In some variants, “a little boy” himself becomes violent and in his cruel games harms an adult. “Sadistic verses” came to Lithuania from Russian tradition, but did not become very popular as it happened there. Even though a few poems were known already in the last decades of the 20th century, the genre entered Lithuanian folklore only in the 21st century when a magazine “Flinto BUMAS” for children (for 8-13 year old boys, mainly) dedicated some space to various horror writings. By now, around 70 different “sadistic verses” are known. Many of them are direct translations of Russian verses. In addition, many more poems similar to “sadistic verses” exist, however, they cross the genre boundaries and are not counted as “sadistic” here. Lithuanian “sadistic verses” are more widespread in the Internet rather than in the living tradition. Many people, who publish and collect these poems, claim that they have learned about them in childhood from the magazine mentioned before. The aim of this article is to analyse the most common plots of “sadistic verses”, focusing on the main character – a child. “Sadistic verses” represent “a little boy” and his adventures in the potentially dangerous world as depicted by adults. The child in the poems seems to live in everyday “horror stories” where any clash with the surrounding environment becomes fatal. “Sadistic verses” with the means of irony and black humour in a brutal and shocking form reveal the problem of alienation in the family and in the society.
