Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article provides a linguistic analysis of the declensional system of nouns, used in the manuscript of Herta Detzkeit-Paul, an emigrant from the Curonian Spit, living in Germany since 1944. Its signs have been identified in order to reveal the characteristic features of the dialect, as well as the tendencies of levelling and extinction. The language of the manuscript texts is coherent, fluent, and thoughtful. Taking into account the reduction of endings, typical for the dialect and extremely progressing in recent years of the community’s existence, the case endings restored on the basis of the material of the text show obvious signs of syncretism. The function of case endings has shifted to syntactical distributional elements: to the control of verbs and other parts of speech, pronouns, especially artroids and prepositions. These signs are reflected in the usage of various declensional types. The examples of the consonant-stem have been analysed separately and it has been determined that it is characterised by the shift to other paradigms of declension, not due to the fact that the speaker has forgotten her mother tongue, but due to the internal changes of the dialect. Similar tendencies can be observed in other Latvian language dialects, as well as in the development of the Lithuanian language dialects.Nevertheless, the changes that have been identified in the strong stems (a-, ja-, ā-, ē-) are considered to be the symptoms of language extinction. The following are worth mentioning: confusion of genders, blending of the strong stems in sporadic cases, disagreement between the forms of adjective / participle and noun cases, a wide use of artroids alongside with the forms that have a reduced ending, the disappearance of locatives with the prolonged ending. Additional research is needed to confirm the universality of these trends (comparisons with materials from other speakers of the same generation). It is possible that data from the speakers who had not lived in Germany after the war would be slightly different. However, in addition to innovations, the above mentioned text displays morphological features of the archaic dialect: the plural dative and instrumental cases with the plural masculine gender of the -s, the instrumental case with -is in a- and ja- stems, the use of prepositions with various cases in plural. The analysed written monument of the Kursenieku language is a valuable information source in many respects: it reveals the stage and tendencies of language development, the ability of a person without philological education to create a written language, and the desire to preserve the language in the historical memory of the culture. Understanding that the Kursenieku language is in the stage of extinction makes every monument more and more valuable as the time passes. [From the publication]
