Santrauka / Anotacija:

ENFocusing on gendering Lithuania as a land or a country (female) and Lithuanians as a nation (male), the aim of this article is to show a discourse analysis of the use of the expressions ‘sister - Lithuania’ and ‘brothers - Lithuanians’. In periodicals, titles of articles and their contents have been analysed; the expressions have been searched for in literature and literary criticism from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries to today. Speaking about Latvian perception of Lithuania, Lithuania is viewed as a sister, with whom a rather similar fate has been experienced and akin values are shared. Lithuanians, on the other hand, are viewed as brothers with common political aims, suggesting a masculine sense, brotherhood. Therefore, it is exciting to provide a deeper insight to this gendered neighbourhood and kinship.
