Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article is devoted to the prewar intellectual (journalist and sociologist, 1896-1971) V. Gustainis. Since early years, he carefully observed and evaluated social life; later the studies of philosophy in the European universities and the work in the sphere of journalism maturated his personality - he focused on the social and political problems which were urgent to the new state. The article analyses some sides of the socialization of V. Gustainis personality (mostly on the authority of the reminiscence of his daughter V. Gustainytė). In his sociophilosophical works V. Gustainis describes the society as the whole of the individuals; their relations are regulated by the institutions and secured by some sanctions. In his understanding the society looks like a nation. V. Gustainis gives much attention to the analysis of such sociological notions as social rightness and sodai organization. According to him, sodai conflicts (but not the revolution) are not useftill for the society. In his articles V. Gustainis analyses the features of some social groups; he accents the worth of the self-sustaining individual who is opposing to the mass man commanded by the total authority. He rejects the conceptions of communism and fascism as related with the constraint, standardization, manipulation of man. When Lithuania came under occupation (beginning with 1940), many people suffered major upheavals. V. Gustainis became the victime of soviet repression: he experienced imprisonment and deportation to Siberia. In the work "Without blame" he describes different methods of teror and genocide in prisons and places of deportation (such as killing, physical and moral torments, personal abasement, worsening or changing of living conditions which causes death). In the fragments of the different life stories of prisoners and deportees the author displayes many traumatic events, the features of exile communities, the order of the disciplinary society. Together with other exile memory books, this work presents a large symbolic power of Lithuanian prisoners and deportee subculture. [From the publication]
