Summary / Abstract:

ENA lot of scientists were greatly interested in the miraculous Aušra Gate’s “The Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of Mercy” painting. Comprehensively was researched also Aušra Gate’s Chapel. It is known too little about high altar - the principal architectural accent of a chapel. To ascertain the creator allows the vivid analogues with 30 years later established the high altar at Sudervė Church, devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Unfoundedly forgot its author Ignotas Gulmanas, mentioned in literature as Pulmanas, worked with his helpers since 1817 till 1820 in this church and has created four altars for it and six huge facade’s sculptures. So much as Aušra Gate’s, so much as Sudervė Church’s altar is low, flat, broken with columns stand figures of Saint Joackim and Saint Anne between them, and has a very splended antablement of annalogic type. Exact, accurate classical architecture of both plants make soft above held grand, from the older epoch inherited gloriae of clouds, swinging a monogram of Mary. The sculptures radiate the creative features of the same artist. We can perceive the characteristic features of the later creative works of J. Gulmanas etc. The researchers think that the altar of Aušra Gate’s chapel is closer to the constructed in 1784 in neighbouring chapel of Pociejai. At present we can attribute to J. Gulmanas’ work only the architectural altar’s part, as the sculptures might be created by the other artist.
