ENThis paper deals with the development of Lith. ragana 'witch'. Etymologically this word is usually linked with Lith. regėti 'to see, perceive', the original meaning of the noun having been *'a clairvoyante, seeress'. In fact, this treatment disagrees with the function of ragana in folklore and historical records. The meaning of ragana, as is attested by Latv. rėgs 'ghost, phantom', is supposed to be derived from the former *'the one seen in a vision or dream; a ghost'. There is no evidence for *'clairvoyante, seeress' as the former meaning of ragana. Supposing Balt. -g-
