Learning to teach: a study of teacher knowledge of EFL teachers

LTStraipsnyje nagrinėjama, kaip anglų kalbos mokytojai pritaiko pedagogines žinias mokydami anglų kaip užsienio kalbos tarptautinėje aplinkoje. Šio tyrimo tikslas buvo ištirti anglų kalbos mokytojų patirtis, mokant anglų kalbą. Tyrimui pasirinkta intensyvi tarptautinė vasaros anglų kalbos programa, įgyvendinama Lietuvoje. Tyrimui buvo atrinkti trys anglų kalbos mokytojai, atstovaujantys įvairiems edukaciniams ir profesiniams dalykams. Buvo naudotas pusiau struktūruotus interviu vasaros pradžioje, viduryje ir pabaigoje. Tyrimas atskleidė, kad grupės kontekste mokytojai tobulino savo mokymą bandydami suprasti savo mokinius ir valdant grupę. Tačiau kiekvienas mokytojas priėjimo ieškojo savitomis strategijomis. Mokyklos kontekste mokytojai išmoko mokyti anglų kalbos dirbdami naujoje aplinkoje, kurioje ugdė teigiamą kolegialumo jausmą. Socialinių situacijų kontekste išryškėjo skirtingi požiūriai įvairiuose pavyzdžiuose. Pedagoginės žinios tobulinamos, siekiant ne tik pamatyti ne tik klasę, bet ir suprasti susijusius kontekstus. Šis tyrimas turi įtakos anglų kalbos mokytojų rengimo programoms. Pirma, mokytojai vertina savo įsitikinimus, prielaidas ir asmenines mokymosi filosofijas, nes šios vertybės daro įtaką jų veiksmams ir perspektyvoms. Antra, studijų programose turėtų būti akcentuojama pedagogika (kursų kūrimas ir mokymo metodai). Trečia, anglų kalbos mokytojų rengimo programos turėtų stipriai paskatinti mokytojus studijuoti socialinius kontekstus, kuriuose jie mokys. Tai gali būti socialinės antropologijos, naujausios pasaulio istorijos ir lyginamosios ugdymo kursai.

ENIn the article, it is analysed, how English teachers apply the pedagogical knowledge while teaching English as foreign language in the international environment. This research aims at investigating the experience of English teachers while teaching English. The intensive international summer English program in Lithuania is chosen for the research. Three English teachers, who represented various educational and professional subjects, were selected for the research. Semi-structuralised interviews were carried out in the beginning, in the middle and in the end of the summer. The research revealed that in the context of the group, the teachers improved their teaching while trying to understand their students and leading the group. However, every teacher searched for the access in their own strategies. In the context of the school, the teachers learned to teach English while working in the new environment, where they developed a positive sense of collegiality. In the context of social situations, different views in various examples were exposed. The pedagogical knowledge is improved, while aiming at seeing not only a class, but also understanding related contexts. This research influences the programmes of preparing the English teachers. Firstly, the teachers value their beliefs, assumptions and personal teaching philosophies, because these values influence their actions and perspectives. Secondly, the study programmes have to emphasize pedagogy (the creation of courses and the methods of teaching). Thirdly, the programmes of preparing the English teachers have to extremely encourage the teachers to study social contexts, in which they will teach. It can be social anthropologies, the latest stories of the world and the courses of education.
