LTXIV a. pabaigoje – XVI a. pradžioje Polocko gyventojų rašyti laiškai Rygos gyventojams primena teisinius dokumentus, todėl yra įdomūs tyrinėtojams. Abiejų tipų dokumentai perduodavo informaciją, būdavo rašomi ant medžiagos (popieriaus, pergamento), jų tikrumas būdavo paliudijamas antspaudu. Vis dėlto istorikai skirtingai vertina laiškų rašymo aplinkybes. Istorikė A. Choroškevič išreiškė požiūrį, jog polockiečių korespondencija buvo kuriama Polocko miesto, vietininko ir vyskupo „kanceliarijose“. Tačiau toks požiūris kelia abejonių. Šiame straipsnyje polockiečių korespondencija tiriama aptariant laiškų autorius, kalbą, tikrumą patvirtinančius ženklus, naudotą medžiagą, formą ir korespondencijos pristatymo būdą. Korespondencijos analizė rodo, kad Polocko vietininkų ir vyskupų laiškų sudarytojai buvo jų asmeniniai raštininkai arba rašovai. Nuolatinio raštininkų personalo, būdingo kanceliarijoms, nebuvo. Miesto kanceliarijos egzistavimą patvirtinančių duomenų taip pat trūksta. Dėl to Polocke egzistavusius raštijos kūrimo centrus tik sąlyginai galima vadinti „kanceliarijomis“. Absoliuti dauguma polockiečių laiškų parašyti rusėniškai. Vienas iš pagrindinių laiškų autentiškumą patvirtinančių ženklų buvo antspaudas. Laiškai būdavo sulankstomi siekiant paslėpti tekstą, o lapo kraštai sujungiami prilipinamu antspaudu. Taigi šis dažnai atlikdavo ir apsauginę funkciją. Laiškai paprastai būdavo rašomi ant popieriaus. Ant pergamento būdavo rašomi svarbesni dokumentai – Polocko ir Rygos sutartys. ENIn the end of 14th century – in the beginning of 16th century, the letters written by the residents of Polotsk to the residents of Riga remind legal documents, thus are interesting for the researchers. Both types of documents transferred information, were written on fabric (paper, parchment), their certainty was testified by stamp. However, historians differently assess the circumstances of writing the letters. Historian A. Khoroshkevich expressed her views that the correspondence of the people of Polotsk was created in the "chancelleries" of vicegerent and bishop of Polotsk. Nevertheless, this approach raises doubts. In this article, the correspondence of Polotsk is analysed by discussing the authors, language, certifying signs of the letters, used fabrics, form and delivery method. The analysis of correspondence shows, that the makers of the letters of vicegerent and bishop of Polotsk were their personal scribes or writers. There was no permanent scribe personnel specific to chancelleries. There is also a lack of the documents that confirm the existence of the chancellery of the city. Therefore, the existed centres of writing in Polotsk can be relatively called "chancelleries". Absolute majority of the letters of the people of Polotsk are written in Ruthenian. One of the main signs of authenticity of the letters was a stamp. The letters were folded in order to cover the text and the edges of the paper were joined with the sticking stamp. Hence, it often performed the function of security. The letters were usually written on paper. The more important documents – agreements between Polotsk and Riga – were written on parchment. The letters written in Polotsk were brought to Riga by various people, who had the trust of addressee.
