Summary / Abstract:

ENBernardas Brazdžionis, one of the most prominent Lithuanian poets, is balancing in his poetry on the line where the areas of art and non-art are facing each other. The ritual symbols in his poems have particular purpose of reconciling the blind obedience to Transcendence, dictated by the religious canons, and doubts, which appear as a result of the attempts of the modem individual to realize the meaning of the existence. The traditional Catholic world-view is combined with the ideas of Christian modernism, so the poet stresses the freedom of the option, the right to make a mistake, the possibility of proper solution and the ambivalence of the human nature. The poems where Brazdžionis tries to reveal the discrepancy between the individual and the world, the contrasts in their intercommunion, are pierced with the dramatic nature of human existence. The individual in the poems is affected by the hectic rhythm of the world, he experiences solitude, guilt, anguish, fear for the future of all humanity. The inner disquietude forces him to look for some support, and he finds that support in the Christian faith. The literature and the religion unite in the world of symbols, where the constant iteration of the penance, sacrifice and lustration ritual helps to reach the inner unity and becomes the guarantee of the world survival as well. The dualistic symbols of water and fire are archetypes, which play very important role in the poetry of Brazdžionis. The tautological religious motifs and universal biblical symbols are closely intertwined. Together they create the illusory world of imagination, in which the ritual expresses constantly renewed deal with Transcendence.
