Summary / Abstract:

ENThe proper publication of sources is one of the most important tasks in all the humanities. The classification of scholarly works in use today in Lithuania employs two terms to describe them: scholarly publication of a source' and scholarly translation' The article reviews how these two types of research works have been defined in the Lithuanian legal acts regulating the evaluation of scientific works, how their relative evaluation has changed in relation to a monograph or a research article, and what the value of these works is for a researcher's career. A review of the history of “scholarly publication of a source” and “scholarly translation” in the Lithuanian legislation on the evaluation of science reveals two distinct periods - 2010-2017 and 2017-2024. In the first period, the definitions of both types of scientific output are shorter and simpler, while in the second period they are more detailed. However, the biggest difference is the following: from 2017 onwards, both “publication of a scholarly source” and “scholarly translation” are subject to a peer-review requirement, which was previously excluded. While the scholarly requirements for the scientific output in question have increased (the peer review requirement has been introduced), the relative weighting, which is used to calculate the points that determine the funding of a researchers institution in the Lithuanian Research Council s Vyturys system, has decreased: Whereas in the first period (2010-2017) the ratio of a monograph or study to the authors quire (40 000 characters) of a scholarly publication or translation was 1:2 (1 author's quire of a monograph equals 2 authors quire of a scholarly publication of a source), in the subsequent period (2017-2024) the ratio became 1:3,5/7,5. This not only undervalues this fundamental humanities work.Worse still, this change in assessment is forcing the management of academic institutions to adopt a “science policy” that encourages the non-production of scholarly editions or scholarly translations of the source. Unlike in countries with a more solid humanities culture, the types of scholarly work in question are considered second-class in terms of a research career, as early as the first publicly available description of the minimum requirements for a research position (2009), and have remained unchanged to the present day. This approach has become an unwritten provision of the Lithuanian Research Council in the assessment of projects submitted to it, where a study-length (>4 a’s quire) introduction or monograph-length (>8 a.s quire) commentary on a scholarly source is assessed as a single research article (>0,25 a.s quire). This reflects, among other things, not only a lack of proper regulation, but also a fundamental misunderstanding of the specificities of the humanities. Keywords: scholarly publishing of a source, scholarly translation, humanities, scholars, careers.
