ENThis article analysed the evolution of religious thought in the poetry of Antanas Strazdas, Kiprijonas Juozas Nezabitauskis-Zabitis, Antanas Baranauskas, Antanas Vienažindys, Aleksandras Burba, Maironis. What is most important in their works? How they understood the human being in God's presence? All these writers were priests of Catholic Church, and their literary heritage is the best witness of the religious self-awareness in the nineteenth century. In the beginning of the nineteenth century in many texts there is reflected the religious selfawareness of community in God's presence. The poetry of Strazdas speaks about human being who is the representative of community. In many works he tried to express the religious feelings of all common Lithuanian people. The first Lithuanian exile writer Nezabitauskis-Zabitis found another way to witness his religious thought. The main material of his works is the fate of homeland and the experience of exile. Many poems of Nezabitauskis-Zabitis could be entitled "Prayers for homeland". Baranauskas was also very anxious about Lithuanian destiny, but he didn't speak about the fight against the aggressors. The salvation was found in the Roman Catholicism. His texts very often invite to preserve the firm faith in God and the traditions of ancestors. In the end of the nineteenth century many works express the religious self-awareness of nation in God's presence. Burba accentuated the importance of Lithuanianism, Maironis prayed for benediction of his nation. This time was very important also for development of individual religious poetry. The manifestation of individualism could be found in the poetry of Baranauskas, Vienažindys and Maironis. Many times Maironis' meditative poems express only the private attitude toward transcendence.The analysis of Strazdas', Nezabitauskis-Zabitis', Baranauskas', Burba' and Maironis' works shows that the religious poetry of the nineteenth century was affected by historical and cultural movement. So the evolution of religious thought could be define by these words - community, homeland, Catholic Church, nation and individuality.
