Pirtis - XIV-XVIIIa. valstiečių "mažoji bažnyčia"

LTViename ankstesnių straipsnių aptarta ritualinė valstiečio sodybos pastato – jaujos – paskirtis. Prieita prie išvados, kad XVI-XVII a. jauja buvo lietuvių valstiečių plačiai praktikuojamų aukojimų seniesiems dievams vieta. Tą rodo ne tik XVI-XVII a. rašytiniai šaltiniai, bet ir XIX-XX a. pr. sakmės bei tikėjimai, išlaikę aukojimo jaujose tradicijos pėdsakus. Tačiau jauja – ne vienintelis to meto valstiečio sodybos pastatas, kuriame atliekamos su senąja religija susijusios apeigos. Pirtis taip pat laikytina ne tik ūkinės, higieninės paskirties statiniu, bet ir mažąja XV-XVII a. valstiečio „bažnyčia“, t. y. vieta, kurioje buvo atliekami dievams, mirusiems protėviams pagerbti skirti ir kitokie ritualai.

ENThe data in the written sources of the 14th-17th centuries concerning the bathhouse rituals are not abundant, and they are quite fragmentary and poorly informative. However, such episodic descriptions, their analysis and especially their comparison with customs, folklore, beliefs of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century suggest that the bathhouse was considered to be a small peasant’s “church” of that period, i.e. a place in which people not only beat themselves with a bunch of birch twigs and washed, but also performed with the old (pre-Christian) religion related rituals (honoring the gods and the dead ancestors, or offering sacrifices after the successful birth). Probably for this reason, from the point of the Christian ideology the bathhouse at the time was considered to be and called the “Devil’s Nest”, i.e. the place of meeting and activities of all kinds of devils and evil spirits.
