LTMintis parašyti Lietuvos istoriją nuo seniausių laikų iki šių dienų ir ją išleisti lietuvių, anglų kalbomis Vilniuje bei Čikagoje gimė 1991 m. pabaigoje, kai Lietuvos istorijos institute Vilniuje lankėsi Lituanistikos studijų ir tyrimo centro JAV pirmininkas prof. dr. J. Račkauskas. Darbo sumanytojus ir jo autorius sujungė tikslas parašyti lietuvi sukurtos bei šimtmečiais puoselėtos Lietuvos valstybės visuomeninę politinę istoriją, skaitytojams pateikti išankstinių direktyvų ir nuostatų nesusaistytą mokslinę sintezę, kuri remtųsi plačia ligšiolinių tyrinėjimų medžiaga. Šiuo darbu siekta pratęsti lietuvių istoriografijos tradiciją. Ši pirmoji projekto knyga aprėpia laikotarpį nuo lietuvių tautos ir valstybingumo ištakų iki Lietuvos panaikinimo 1795 metais. Darbe akcentuojami svarbiausi atskirų istorinių laikotarpių tautos ir istorinės Lietuvos valstybės vidaus bei užsienio visuomenės politinės raidos momentai, atskleidžiamas lietuvių valstybingumo susiklostymo fenomenas, parodomi š visuomenės politinės intelektualinės brandos procesą lėmę bei lydėję socialiniai, konfesiniai ir kultūriniai reiškiniai. Konkrečių istorinių laikotarpių ypatumai ir autorių individualybė nulėmė kiekvieno skyriaus savitumus, nesistengta vienodinti redaktoriaus plunksna. Autoriai norėjo išvengti tiesmukiškų, kategoriškų vertinimų bei apibendrinimų, stengėsi parodyti, kad svarbūs ir ypač istoriografijoje diskutuojami dalykai gali būti įvairiai interpretuojami. Tekstą papildo svarbiausių istoriografijos darbų anotuota apžvalga, naujai parengti žemėlapiai bei iliustracijos.

ENThe idea to write the history of Lithuania from the oldest times to the present day and to publish it in Lithuanian and English languages in Vilnius and Chicago, was born in late 1991, when Professor J. Račkauskas - the chairman of the Research Center of the Lithuanian Philology Studies in the USA visited Lithuanian Institute of History in Vilnius. The initiators of the task and the author were joined by the goal to write down for centuries nurtured socio-political history of Lithuania and to provide the readers with a non-binding scientific synthesis based on the extensive research material. The aim of this work was to extend the tradition of Lithuanian historiography. This book is the first one of the project and it covers the period from the rise of the Lithuanian nation and its statehood, to the abolition of the State in 1795. The work highlights the most important political moments of the nation and the historical Lithuanian state in the internal and external society. It reveals the phenomenon of the emergence of Lithuanian statehood, demonstrates the process of political and intellectual maturity of the society, accompanied by social, confessional and cultural occurrences. The characteristics of specific historical periods and the individuality of the authors resulted in the peculiarities of each chapter, however, the editor did not attempt to make the book seem more consistent. The authors wanted to avoid straightforward, categorical evaluations and summaries, and tried to demonstrate that even the important matters and especially – the matters discussed in the historiography can be interpreted in various ways. The text is complemented by an annotated overview of the most important historiographical works, newly prepared maps and illustrations.
