Summary / Abstract:

LTŠemetų giminės ištakos siejamos su XV a. vid. ENThe origins of the Šemetos family are believed to appear in the middle of the 15th century. The originators of its 2 branches were sons of Šemeta Nemeikaitis – Mikalojus and Jonas. It is not clear, when and why the line of Jonas came to be called the Šemetos, however at the beginning of the 16th century Jurgis Jonaitis already had this surname. The oldest mentioning shows that the Nemeikaičiai–Šemetos were kindred to the Galginai, Račkaičiai, Jackaičiai, Radaičiai, and the Butkaičiai (Butkevičiai); their patrimonial estate was Voverys (presently Belarus). These were descendants of Andrius Galginas, a participant of Horodlės Union, who received Gulbės (Swan) coat of arms. The descendants used this heraldic symbol not only in the coat of arms but in the seal as well. The family’s activity in public life commenced in the 16th century, when the Šemetos moved to their residence in Samogitia. Thus they were mainly connected to this territory. In politics the most prominent figure was member of the Council of Lords Merkelis Stanislovaitis. Noblemen entrusted him represent their interests to the sovereign. The latter also esteemed Merkelis (he assigned him to the Committee composing the 2nd Statute). M. Šemeta together with other members of the Council of Lords participated in the Seimas of Liublin discussing the project of the Polish-Lithuanian Union. During the Reformation the Šemetos maintained correspondence with Duke Albrecht residing in Prussia, who urged them to send their children learn abroad. With expansion of the new religious trend a need to fund the Lutherans and the Calvinists emerged. The Šemetos distinguished by nourishing the Reformation in Samogitia.
