Sėlių žemės mįslės

LTStraipsnyje pristatoma senoji Rokiškio ir sėlių žemės istorija: supažindinama su istoriniais duomenimis apie Sėlą, kurios gyventojus XIII a. pr. minėjo Livonijos kronikininkas Henrikas Latvis. Daroma prielaida, jog seniausi sėlių paminėjimai gali būti susiję su vėlyvąja Antika. Archeologiniai tyrinėjimai liudija sėlių žemėje egzistavus brūkšniuotosios keramikos ir pilkapių kultūrą, taip pat ir tai, jog sėlių medžiaginė kultūra buvo artimiausia latgaliams. Sėlos vietovardžius tyrinėjęs Kazimieras Būga padarė išvadą, jog lietuviai Sėlos žemėse prie Dauguvos apsigyveno ne vėliau kaip VII-VIII a. Įkūrus Rygos miestą, ordinas pradėjo rengti karo žygius prieš neapkrikštytas padauguvio gentis – tarp jų ir sėlius; Sėlos pilis buvo užkariauta 1207 m., o jos gyventojai - pakrikštyti. XIII a. Lietuvos valstybės politinės ir karinės krizės metu, Sėlos žemės buvo užrašytos Livonijos ordinui kaip dėkingumo ženklas. Vokiečiai siekė įsitvirtinti Sėloje – praėjus dešimtmečiui po Sėlpilio užkariavimo ir sėlių krikšto, buvo įsteigta Sėlos vyskupystė. Nepaisant to, XIII a. viduryje Sėla vis dar laikyta nekrikščioniška, vadinasi, vokiečiai joje dar nebuvo įsitvirtinę. Nagrinėjant kalavijuočių žygių į Lietuvą aprašymus Hermano Vartbergės kronikoje paaiškėjo, jog žygiuose Sėla buvo apeinama; todėl į ją siūloma žvelgti kaip į retai apgyvendintą, apaugusią miškais ir užpelkėjusią žemę. XV a. antrojoje pusėje pastūmėjus sieną šiaurės kryptimi, Sėlos žemes ėmė kolonizuoti lietuviai, o sėlių kultūra – nykti. ENThe article presents the ancient history of Rokiškis and Selonian lands: it introduces the historical data on Selonia, whose inhabitants were mentioned by Livonian chronicler Henry of Latvia at the beginning of the 13th century. It is assumed that the earliest mentions of Selonia may be related to the late classical era. Archaeological investigations testify to the existence of the culture of hatch pottery and barrows in the Selonian lands, as well as to the fact that their culture of materials was the closest to Latgalians. Kazimieras Būga, who explored the place names of Selonia, concluded that Lithuanians started living in the Selonian lands near Dauguva no later than in the 7th-8th centuries. After the city of Riga was established, the Order began to organize crusades against the tribes of this region that have not yet received baptism - including Selonians; the Selonian castle was conquered in 1207, and its inhabitants were baptised. In the 13th century, during the political and military crisis of Lithuania, the Livonian Order was given the lands of Selonia as a sign of gratitude. The Germans sought to establish themselves in Selonia - a decade after the conquest of Sēlpils and the baptism of Selonians, a bishopric of Selonia was established. Nevertheless, in the middle of the 13th century, Selonia was still considered non-Christian, which means that the Germans were not yet established here. When analysing the descriptions of the crusades to Lithuania of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword provided in the chronicles of Hermann von Wartberge, it turned out that Selonia was bypassed; therefore, it is proposed to be viewed as a rarely populated, waterlogged land overgrown with forests. In the second half of the 15th century, having pushed the border northward, Lithuanians began to colonize the lands of Selonia, and the culture of Selonia was slowly dying.
