Summary / Abstract:

ENIt is noted that the history of the Biržai Castle was explored mainly based on written, cartographic and iconographic sources, but the history of city's fortifications and architecture were not actually explored, as well as in the research of the Biržai Castle, the archaeological data were used only partially. The new archaeological data allowed to concretise the questions of the castle's construction history and the formation of the whole castle's complex, therefore, this article aims to draw attention to the new archaeological material by complementing already covered, undiscussable questions of the castle's history. The article distinguishes and presents two prevailing positions on the periodisation of the Biržai Castle: some authors distinguish two phases (the first and the second castle - Italian and Dutch type (Kitkauskas 1975)), the others – three (Pinkus 1986). According to the authors of this article, there is no point talking about the three Biržai castles, as S. Pinkus devotes the most about the reformation of the second castle's ramparts by the new example of the Dutch bastion castles. It is suggested to consider that this is the initial stage of the second castle's reconstruction, i. e. the beginning of the second castle's construction. The second castle was built in two stages, which cover a long period of about 70 years. First, ramparts and fosse were reformed, later the builders of the castle started constructing the yard and the necks of the bastion. The authors of the article conclude that this is the second, Dutch type castle which history covers the period from the 3-4 decade of the 17th century to 1704.
