Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Aleksandras, 1461-1506 (Aleksandras II, Aleksandras Jogailaitis, Alexander Jagiellon); Aleksandras Jogailaitis, Vilniaus Žemutinė pilis; Denarai; Monetos; Numizmatika; Pusgrašiai; Valdovų rūmai; Vilniaus žemutinė pilis; Alexander Jagiellonian; Alexander Jegiello, Grand Ducal Palace; Coins; Denarii; Half-pennies; Lithuania; Numismatics; The Vilnius Lower Castle; Vilnius Lower Castle.

ENThe article deals with the finds of coins of the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Alexander Jagiellon (1492-1506), which helps to analyse the problems of the development of Vilnius Lower Castle. In total, over 60 coins of the Grand Duke Alexander were discovered, the analysis of which led to a radical change in the process of the building of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and the entire Lower Castle. Based on the data regarding said coins, most of the oldest stoneworks were still in place throughout the years of the rule of the Grand Duke, Alexander, and the first years of the Sigismund the Old's rule (1506-1548), thus the supposed beginning of the building of Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania (the end of the 15th century-the beginning of the 16th century) must be moved to 1520s and attributed only to the period of Sigismund the Old's rule. In about 1520-1530, one of the oldest complexes of the buildings of the Lower Castle was demolished and new palaces were built, which now form the eastern and southern hulls of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. It remains unclear whether all known stonework stood during the years of Alexander's rule, or only part of them. According to archaeological, historical and numismatic sources, the old buildings, in the north of the old Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania - an octagonal tower with defensive walls, were demolished at the end of 1546. The article presents a register of the finds of the Grand Duke Alexander's coins in the territory of the Vilnius Lower Castle, consisting of 48 denarius and 12 half-Groschens of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and 5 half-Groschens of the Polish Kingdom.
