Summary / Abstract:

Nuo Vytauto Didžiojo mirties iki XVI a. pr. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Archeologiniai duomenys; Archeologiniai radiniai; Christianizacija; Katalikybės ekspancija; Krikščioniški simboliai; Lietuvos Didžioji Kunigaikštystė (LDK; Grand Duchy of Lithuania; GDL); Lietuvos Didžioji Kunigaikštystė (LDK; Grand Duchy of Lithuania; GDL); Lietuvos krikštas; Lotyniška christianizacija; Ortodoksų Bažnyčia; Provoslaviškos teritorijos; Stačiatikiai; Vakarų krikščionys; Archaeological artefact; Archeological data; Baptism of Lithuania; Christian symbols; Expansion of Catholicism; Latin Christianisation; Orthodox Church; Orthodox territory; Ortodox Christians.

ENOnce the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was baptized and adopted Catholicism in 1387, a new ideological-cultural process began. It means that smaller territories were had to convert to Catholicism in a bigger state and it was followed by a confessional confrontation with an influential Orthodox Church, which dominated more territories. The article examines processes of Christianization in GDL in 14-15th centuries. The research has revealed that the baptism of Lithuania and the process of Christianization faced many difficulties in 1378-1417 when the Catholic Church was shaken up by the Western Schism. The true pope from the two possible ones (later three) was not clear. During this period, the Diocese of Vilnius was established, and later so was the Diocese of Medininkai. Since the death of Vytautas the Great up until the 16th century, more than 100 churches were built in Vilnius, and more than two-thirds of them were on Slavic Orthodox lands: Black Ruthenia, Podlachia, Polotsk, the duchy of Vitebsk and in other places. Tendencies were observed when Catholicism spread to the south-eastern and eastern lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which have long been Orthodox. Late 14th century and the 15th century archaeological findings in the territory of the GDL have Christian symbols, which clearly show the acceptance of the Catholic culture in Lithuania and Samogitia. A comparative archaeological analysis shows viable relations with the neighbouring Livonia during the Christianization. Only ornamental temple decorations made from beads can be considered as archaeological Orthodox heritage.
