ENThe architecture and the stock of the chapels of Christ’s Way of the Cross in Žemaičių Kalvarija have now changed in comparison with the year 1642 when they were first erected. Their interior has also changed considerably in the course of time. The old canvases have not survived. The pictures that are found in the chapels today date back to no further than the 19th century. They were painted by unknown amateur artists. In these paintings, no distinct boundary between professional and non-professional art can be set. The only exception is The Agony in the Garden dated from the second half of the 17th century. There is also an important work of local folk art, an example of the classical painting Christ Questioned by Pilate. The chapel of the Crucifixion decorated by artist Varnelis is a work of art of the Republican significance. Lately, the pictures have been newly restored and are sources of true and genuine spirituality of the surroundings.
