ENStephen Bathory University in Vilnius existed from 1919 to 1939. From the outset, its structure included provisions for establishing a University archive to store all documents not required for daily administration. Premises for the future archive were allocated at 7 University Street. However, it remains unclear whether any documents were actually stored there at that time, as the Polish war with Bolshevik Russia, which began in early July 1920, disrupted the activities of the reestablished University and its departments. In the late autumn 1920, despite the difficult situation in the war-torn country and the ongoing conflict with the Republic of Lithuania, Stephen Bathory University began its second academic year. Nevertheless, the establishment of the University archive was postponed for a long time and was realized only in early 1938. Until the SBU archive was formally established, documents intended to form its future holdings were collected and stored within the various faculties and divisions. Another part of the planned SBU archive was to consist of materials from the inventory of the old Vilnius University, which was expected to be recovered from Russia, however, this did not occur due to the opposition of Russia and later the USSR. After the outbreak of World War II on September 1, 1939, the archive, like other University departments, continued to operate. However, on December 15, 1939, by order of the Lithuanian government, Stephen Bathory University ceased its operations, and all its assets were transferred to the newly established Lithuanian Vilnius University. Along with all other assets, on December 15, 1939, the new Lithuanian University received the former SBU archive, which at that time consisted of 9,255 volumes of documents. When the Lithuanian administration took over Vilnius Stephen Bathory University, the archive itself was not liquidated; instead, the remaining documents of the dissolved SBU were transferred to it. By May 17,1940, the archive contained 16,486 volumes of documents. The subsequent fate of the archive during the war years is not exactly known. After the war, its holdings were for some time kept in the archives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Lithuanian SSR, and later transferred to the Central State Archives of the Lithuanian SSR. Today, they are preserved in the Central State Archives of Lithuania, under fund number 175. In total, this fund contains 23,616 volumes, organised into 15 inventories. These documents are significant not only for understanding the activities of Stephen Bathory University itself but also for studying other scientific, educational and cultural institutions and public organizations that operated in Vilnius during the interwar period. They continue to be examined by both Lithuanian and foreign scholars, primarily from Poland. Keywords: interwar Vilnius, Vilnius Stephen Bathory University, Vilnius Stephen Bathory University Archive, the Central State Archives of Lithuania, the Stephen Bathory University Archival holdings.
