Šv. Antano gimnazija Kennebunkporte: religinis ir tautinis ugdymas

LTStraipsnyje analizuojama Šv. Antano gimnazijos, kuri veikė JAV, Kennebunkporte, 1956-1969 m., istorija ir veikla. Tai lietuvių pranciškonų Amerikoje įkurta pirma ir vienintelė berniukų gimnazija. Joje dėstyta anglų kalba, bet lietuvių kalba gimnazijoje taip pat užėmė svarbią vietą. Gimnazijos tikslas buvo mokyti ir auklėti lietuvių išeivių vaikus lietuvybės dvasia. Per trylika gimnazijos gyvavimo metų dvasininko profesiją pasirinko tik keli gimnazistai. Šv. Antano gimnazijoje sklandžiai organizuota įvairiapusė užklasinė veikla. Nepaisant gimnazijos privalumų, joje pasitaikydavo ir vidinių problemų: gimnazistai prastai mokėsi, gimnazistai buvo skriaudžiami, vyravo nepaklusnumas gimnazijos tvarkai, gimnazistai nebemokėjo lietuvių kalbos. Be minėtų problemų, lietuvių išeivijos visuomenė gimnaziją kaltino tuo, kad ji neparengia gimnazistų JAV kolegijoms ir nepuoselėja lietuviškumo gimnazijoje. Gimnazistų mažėjo, todėl pasibaigus 1968–1969 mokslo metams gimnaziją teko uždaryti. Gimnaziją įkūrė ir 1956-1964 m. jai vadovavo tėv. Jurgis Gailiušis. Nuo 1964 m. iki gimnazijos uždarymo jai vadovavo tėv. Leonardas Andriekus.

ENArticle analyses St. Anthony’s gymnasium in Kennebunkport, USA, which operated from 1956 till 1969. It was the first and only boys’ gymnasium in America founded by Lithuanian Franciscans where students were taught not only in English; Lithuanian language took an important place in its educationalsystem. The goal of the gymnasium was to pull in and renew ecclesiastical caste with new callings out of gymnasium students. This goal was realized only slightly,since during the thirteen years of the existence of the gymnasium only few students had chosen cleric’s path. Diverse extracurricular activities operated in St. Anthony’s gymnasium. Notwithstanding the advantages of the gymnasium, there also were some internal problems – students of the gymnasium studied poorly, were wronged, did not obey to the order of the gymnasium, and also did not know Lithuanian. Besides the mentioned problems, the community of Lithuanian emigrants blamed the gymnasium for not preparing its students for the studies in the USA colleges and badly cherishing Lithuanianness in the gymnasium. Since the number of students began to decrease, it had to be closed at the end of 1968/69 school year. In 1956-1964 Father J. Gailiušis managed the foundation of the gymnasium and the beginning of its operation, and at the second part of its existence and closing (1964-1969) it was directed by Father Leonardas Andriekus.
