Summary / Abstract:

ENArticle describes the archaeological finds of textile discovered during the archaeological exploration (carried out by archaeologist Ieva Masiulienė) at the Old Town of Klaipėda in 2007. The finds were handed over to the Lithuania Minor History Museum and underwent conservation treatment at the Pranas Gudynas Restoration Centre. The publication discusses the technological characteristics and usage of the discovered bits of textile. It provides a broad overview of the research, restoration and reconstruction of a rather rare finding - a felt cap. The author of the publication indicates that carrying out the conservation of the discovered textile fragments, the specialists at the Pranas Gudynas Restoration Centre of the Lithuanian Art Museum performed micro chemical and morphological analysis as well as technological examination of the strands of all found bits of textile, threads, and strings. Even the research of those tiny bits and pieces have provided an opportunity to learn what kinds of textile - daily, for special occasions, or even imported - were used by craftsmen in Klaipėda in the 16th-17th centuries. A felt cap was reconstructed after archaeological finds. It is likely to become a standout exhibit of the collection of the Old Town findings preserved at the Lithuania Minor History Museum.
