Summary / Abstract:

ENBy using traditionally established euphemisms (in this presentation they are referred to as shielding euphemisms) the society itself is making an influence or pressure of a prohibitive nature on its every member, and the speaker subconsciously submits this demand. These euphemisms that are always created using other words, paraphrases, usually have a figurative meaning; therefore they can be associated with various tropes and figures. The discussed diminutive nouns with a positive emotional impact on the participants of the process used in lawyers’ speeches are attributable not to the area of shielding but to disguising euphemisms. In contrast to shielding euphemisms, these euphemisms are made from the same words with hypocoristic diminutive suffixes and are usually used in the literal meaning. It is not the society that influences the speaker by disguising euphemisms, but the speaker himself by hiding his real aims slightly influences the society – the addressee. By using these euphemisms the lawyer is creating a “dream world” and inconspicuously, secretly appealing to the judges’ feelings. The inconspicuous creation of the “dream world” in the lawyer’s speech is legitimate, in other words, it is not prohibited, if the speaker does not digress from the hearing of the case. Through euphemistic diminutive nouns the lawyer influences the judge’s soul, manages his reaction in order to mollify the judgement. Rhetoric is much freer that the objective law which recognizes only the language of facts because the art of the lawyer orator is created as a legitimate means in order to achieve aims. Euphemistic diminutive nouns are one of these means. [From the publication]
