Assessment components influencing effectiveness of studies: marine engineering students' opinion

LTStudijų efektyvumo fenomenas tampa didele problema dėl jos glaudaus ryšio su studijų kokybe. Studentų pasiekimų vertinimas yra vienas iš veiksnių, turinčių įtakos studijų efektyvumui; ir šiandien tai gana problematiška. Straipsnyje siekta atskleisti studentų nuomonę apie periodiško vertinimo įtaką studijų efektyvumui. Tyrimas atliktas 2009 metais, atlikta 132 jūrų inžinerijos studijų studentų apklausa. Teorinė analizė išryškino studentų pasiekimų vertinimo komponentus, darančius teigiamą įtaką studijų efektyvumui: vertinimo dažnumas, vertinimo metodai, studentams teikiama grįžtamoji informacija, studentų dalyvavimas vertinimo procese (savęs vertinimas). Tyrimo rezultatai patvirtino teorines įžvalgas apie tinkamai naudojamų studentų pasiekimų vertinimo komponentų teigiamą įtaką (pvz., vertinimo dažnumą, vertinimo metodus, atsiliepimus, charakteristikas, studentų dalyvavimą vertinimo procese) studijų efektyvumui. Optimalaus vertinimo dažnis – trys kartai per semestrą, nors kai kurie respondentai manė, kad jų pasiekimus galima vertinti dar dažniau. Tiriamųjų tarpe neatsirado nė vieno studento, teigiančio, kad vertinimas išvis nereikalingas. Daugumos respondentų teigimu, studijų efektyvumas didės tuomet, kai bus naudojami ne tik tradiciniai vertinimo metodai (uždari ir atviri testai), bet ir nauji (grupės diskusijos, praktinės užduotys ir kt.). Beveik visi studentai manė, kad norint pasiekti aukščiausią studijų efektyvumą, reikia vertinti tarpines užduotis.

ENThe phenomenon of study efficiency becomes a major problem due to its close relationship with the quality of studies. Student achievement assessment is one of the factors influencing the effectiveness of studies; and today it is quite problematic. The aim of the article is to reveal the students' opinion about the influence of periodic assessment on the effectiveness of studies. The survey was conducted in 2009, and 132 students of marine engineering were surveyed. The theoretical analysis highlighted the components of student achievement assessment, which have a positive impact on the effectiveness of the studies: frequency of assessment, assessment methods, feedback to students, and participation of students in the assessment process (self-assessment). The results of the research confirmed the theoretical insights about the positive effect of the appropriately used components of the student achievement assessment (e.g. frequency of assessment, assessment methods, feedback, characteristics, and student participation in the assessment process) on the effectiveness of the studies. The optimal assessment rate is three times per semester, although some respondents felt that their achievements can be assessed even more often. There was no student stating that there is no need for an assessment. A majority of respondents stated that the effectiveness of studies will increase only when besides the traditional methods of assessment (closed and open tests) the new ones (group discussions, practical tasks, etc.) will be used. Almost all students thought that intermediate tasks should be assessed in order to achieve the highest level of study efficiency.
