Jak nie doszło do schizmy. Rzeczpospolita a Stolica Apostolska w czasie Sejmu Czteroletniego
LTStraipsnyje analizuojama, kaip keturių metų seimo metu buvo išvengta schizmos tarp Abiejų Tautų Respublikos ir Apaštalų Sosto. 1789 m. liepos 24 d. Abiejų Tautų Respublikos Seimas priėmė „Kariuomenės aprūpinimo“ įstatymą, kuriuo buvo numatyta nusavinti Krokuvos vyskupo valdas ir mokėti jam kasmetinę 100 tūkstančių auksinų algą iš valstybės iždo. Panašiai turėjo būti ir su visais kitais vyskupais. Bažnytinių valdų nusavinimas kariuomenės reikmėms taikos metu ir vyskupų aprūpinimas išmokant algas buvo nepriimtinas Apaštalų Sostui. Kompromiso buvo ieškoma nuo 1786 m. rugpjūčio iki 1790 m. gegužės mėnesio, kuomet vyko derybos tarp popiežiaus nuncijaus, vyskupų kolegijos ir Seimo delegacijos. „Kariuomenės aprūpinimo“ įstatymo autorius Wojciechas Suchodolskis atsisakė daryti kokius nors pakeitimus, tačiau 1790 m. gegužės 25 d. jis išvyko iš Varšuvos, o Seimas priėmė kompromisinį įstatymo variantą. Buvo nutarta nenusavinti Bažnyčios turto, o vyskupams numatyta gauti 100 tūkstančių auksinų kasmetinių pajamų iš jiems priklausančių valdų. Šis kompromisas padėjo išvengti schizmos tarp Abiejų Tautų Respublikos ir Apaštalų Sosto bei sudarė sąlygas popiežiui Pijui VI palaiminti 1791 m. gegužės 3 d. Konstituciją. Iki šio buvo nežinomos Suchodolskio išvykimo priežastys. ENThe law "Fund for the Army", passed by the Sejm on 24 July 1789, envisaged the secularisation of the estates of the bishopric of Cracow, and the payment by the treasury to the next bishop of an annual salary of 100 000 złotys. As other bishoprics fell vacant, the same principle would be applied to them. Both the seizure of ecclesiastical funds for the army in peacetime and the provision for bishops to receive salaries, rather than draw revenues from landed estates belonging to the Church, were unacceptable to the Holy See. A compromise was hammered out from August 1789 to May 1790 in wide-ranging negotiations between the papal nuncio, the episcopal college, and a deputation appointed by the Sejm. The deputation conceded on the key question of episcopal revenue. However, the Sejm, although confederated, could alter its earlier decisions only unanimously. The author of the law, Wojciech Suchodolski, the envoy for Chełm, refused to agree to any change in "Fund for the Army". However, when Suchodolski left Warsaw, on 25 May 1790 the Sejm unanimously agreed that bishops could draw annual revenues of 100 000 złotys from landed estates in the possession of the Church. This compromise avoided a potential schism between Warsaw and Rome and created the conditions for the blessing bestowed by Pope Pius VI on the Constitution of 3 May 1791.The reason for Suchodolski's departure has until now remained a mystery. A hitherto overlooked letter, reproduced here in full, reveals that Suchodolski was sent away by his patron, Franciszek Ksawery Branicki, the grand hetman of the Polish Crown, so that the ecclesiastical business could be transacted. The letter is also a vignette of the difficult relations between aristocratic patrons and their clients during the Four Years' Sejm.
