LTLietuvių tautinio atgimimo veikėjai neįsivaizdavo atstatytos Lietuvos valstybės be Vilniaus kaipo jos sostinės. Problema buvo ta, kad Vilniuje ir Vilniaus krašte dar prieš Liublino uniją prasidėjusio šio savaiminio slavėjimo, tiksliau polonizacijos proceso išdavoje XIX a. pabaigoje – XX a. pradžioje didelė dalis gyventojų jau nebekalbėjo lietuviškai. Polonizacija spartėjo tarpukario metais, bet kita vertus, Nepriklausomos Lietuvos visuomenė ir politikai dar tvirčiau laikėsi nuostatos, jog Vilniaus ir Vilniaus kraštas turi priklausyti Lietuvai. Autorius pateikia požiūrį į problemą autoritetingiausio Nepriklausomos Lietuvos asmens – ilgamečio Respublikos prezidento Antano Smetonos. Atkreipiamas dėmesys, jog Lietuvos visuomenė nepakankamai suprato, ar tiesiog nenorėjo suprasti, kad didelė dalis Vilniaus ir Vilniaus krašto gyventojų, nepaisant jų etninės kilmės neturi lietuviškos sąmonės ir netgi, jei taip galima pasakyti, „nenori tapti lietuviais“. 1939 m. spalio mėn. prijungus Vilnių prie Lietuvos Respublikos, realybė pasirodė kitokia, negu ją matė 1920–1939 m. Nepriklausomos Lietuvos visuomenė. ENThe members of Lithuanian national Renaissance could not imagine rebuilding of their country without Wilno as its capital. In Wilno and its district, even before the Lublin Union, the process of slavonication, or to be more precise polonization, was started. Consequently, the majority of inhabitants were unable to speak Lithuanian on the turn of the XIXth century. In the period between wars, on one hand the process of polonization boomed, but on the other hand the society and politicians of independent Lithuania confirmed their conviction that Wilno with its district should belong to Lithuania. On this issue the author refers to the views of the most reliable politician of independent Lithuania, a long-standing President of the Republic - Antanas Smetona. Additionally he points out the fact that Lithuanian society was not fully aware, or even did not want to understand, that the majority of Wilno and its district's inhabitants did not show Lithuanian national awareness and did not want to become Lithuanian. Therefore in October 1939, when Wilno's district was incorporated into the Republic of Lithuania, the reality turned out to be somewhat different from what was perceived by the society of Independent Lithuania between 1920-1939.
