LTXIX a. pabaigoje daugiau nei du trečdaliai Žemaitijos diduomenės laikė save lietuviais; tuo tarpu likusioje Lietuvos dalyje du trečdaliai bajorų save įvardijo lenkais. Nepaisant to, netgi čia, Panevėžio, Vilniaus apskrityse ir rytinėje (aukštaičių) Šiaulių apskrities dalyje virš 20 proc. bajorų buvo lietuviai, Kauno apskrityje tokių būta virš 10 proc., kitose apskrityse – iki 10 proc. Taigi, užsitęsęs polonizacijos ir dalinai rusifikacijos procesas stipriai veikė Lietuvos diduomenės tautinę orientaciją. Surašymo duomenimis, 2,4 proc. Didžiosios Lietuvos gyventojų buvo bajorai. Lietuviai niekada nebuvo vien valstiečių tauta; bajorija sudarė nedidelę, bet labai reikšmingą tautos dalį. ENAt the end of the nineteenth century over two-thirds of the Samogitian nobility considered themselves Lithuanian, possibly of some Samogitian variety; while in the rest of Lithuania over two-thirds of the nobles treated themselves as Poles. Nevertheless, even there, in such counties as Panevėžys, Vilnius and the eastern (Aukštaitian) area of the county of Šiauliai, over 20 per cent of the nobles were Lithuanian, in the county of Kaunas that number was over 10 percent and in other counties it was less than 10 per cent. Thus the protracted process of Polonization and in part of Belorussianization left its strong imprint on the national orientation of the Lithuanian nobility. According to the census the nobles constituted about 2.4 per cent of the total population of Lithuania Major. Consequently, the Lithuanians were never a single-estate peasant nation, the nobility making up a small, but nevertheless significant part of the nation. [From the publication]
