Forms of political expression in the Lithuanian community of Canada (1973-1990)

LTLietuvai atkūrus Nepriklausomybę, tyrinėtojai ėmė aktyviau domėtis lietuvių išeivių istorija. Valstybingumo atkūrimo procesas buvo sunkiai įsivaizduojamas be Lietuvos išeivių paramos ir politinių veiksmų XX a. 8–9 dešimtmečiais. Šiame straipsnyje aiškinamasi, kokias politinės (savi)raiškos formas pasitelkė Kanados lietuviai siekdami Lietuvos Nepriklausomybės. Taip pat nagrinėjami santykiai tarp Kanados lietuvių, latvių ir estų, apžvelgiamos lietuvių bendruomenės veiksmų formos politikos srityje. Straipsnyje politine (savi)raiška laikoma tiek lietuvių bendruomenės politinė veikla, tiek bendruomenės lyderių pastangos užsienio šalyse skleisti informaciją apie situaciją Baltijos valstybėse, žadinti tarptautinės bendruomenės sąmoningumą šiuo klausimu. Dar 1949 m. trys Baltijos valstybių išeivių bendruomenės įsteigė jungtinę organizaciją – Baltijos federaciją Kanadoje. Šia prasme lietuvių bendruomenė praktiškai visą laikotarpį veikė ne viena, tačiau kartu su kitomis išeivių bendruomenėmis – latviais, estais, ukrainiečiais. Daugiakultūrinės politikos įtvirtinimas Kanadoje XX a. 9 deš. pradžioje suteikė naujų glaudesnio lietuvių, latvių ir estų bendradarbiavimo galimybių. Nuo 1973 m. trijų išeivijos bendruomenių atstovai organizavo Baltijos vakarus Kanados parlamente, aktyviai dalyvavo protestuose prieš žmogaus teisių pažeidimus Sovietų Sąjungoje, kėlė šią problemą Europos saugomo ir bendradarbiavimo konferencijose. ENAfter the restoration of Independence, researchers showed more active interest in the history of Lithuanian emigrants. The process of statehood restoration could hardly be imagined without the support of Lithuanian emigrants and political actions of the 8th–9th decades of the 20th century. This article discusses forms of political (self) expression used by Canadian Lithuanians while seeking Lithuania’s independence. Relations between Canadian Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians are analysed, forms of actions of the Lithuanian community in the field of politics are reviewed. In the article, political (self) expression is perceived as political activities of the Lithuanian community as well as efforts by leaders of the community to disseminate in foreign countries information about the situation in the Baltic States and encourage the consciousness of the international community on the matter. As far back as in 1949, emigrant communities of the three Baltic States established a united organisation – the Baltic Federation in Canada. With this regard, the Lithuanian community was not acting alone during this period, but together with other emigrant communities – Latvians, Estonians and Ukrainians. The consolidation of multicultural politics at the outset of the 9th decade of the 20th century provided Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians with new cooperation opportunities. Since 1973, representatives of the three communities of emigrants organised Baltic evenings in the Parliament of Canada, actively participated in protests against human rights violations in the Soviet Union, raised this problems at conferences for security and cooperation in Europe.
