Reflections on the Holocaust in Lithuania: a new book by Alfonas Eidintas
LTSkaitytojui pristatoma žymaus istoriko, buvusio Lietuvos ambasadoriaus JAV ir Izraelyje Alfonso Eidinto knygos „Lietuvos žydų žudynių byla“ (2001) recenzija. A. Eidintas užsibrėžia tikslą išanalizuoti holokausto Lietuvoje reiškinį platesniame istoriniame kontekste, pristato tai masinių žudynių bylą. Ši byla yra sudėtinga tuo, kad imama narplioti praėjus šešiasdešimt metų po analizuojamų įvykių. Recenzuojamą istoriko darbą sudaro dvi dalys: pirmojoje dalyje pateikiamas netrumpas lietuvių ir žydų santykių istorijos įvadas, o antroji dalis – tai lietuvių autorių straipsnių ir dokumentų rinkinys (nuo 1941 m. iki šiandienos). Knygoje pirmiausiai nagrinėjami lietuvių ir žydų santykiai nuo XIX a. iki Pirmojo pasaulinio karo, ypatingą dėmesį skiriant lietuvių požiūrio į žydus specifikai. Toliau aptariamas žydų vaidmuo tarpukario nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje (1919–1940 m.). Trečias ir ketvirtas poskyriai yra svarbiausi, juose nagrinėjama intelektualinė holokausto refleksija bei atmintis, lietuvių autorių – daugiausia pokario išeivių Šiaurės Amerikoje – požiūris į šį tragišką Lietuvos istorijos tarpsnį. Atskleidžiamos lietuvių išeivijos bei sovietmečio autorių darbų apie holokaustą Lietuvoje tendencingumo apraiškos, netikslumai bei kiti trūkumai. Galiausiai apžvelgiami holokausto atminties pokyčiai ir tendencijos po 1990 metų. Skaitytojas knygoje taip pat ras originalių istorinių dokumentų bei naujausių tyrimų įžvalgų. Aptariama knyga be abejonės yra svarbus indėlis lietuviškoje holokausto istoriografijoje.
ENThe reader is introduced to the review of a book “Lietuvos žydų žudynių byla” [The Case of the Massacre of Lithuanian Jews] (2001) by eminent historian and former Lithuanian ambassador to the USA and Israel, Alfonsas Eidintas. A. Eidintas sets the goal of analysing the Holocaust phenomenon in Lithuania in a wider historical context and introduces a massacre case. This case is complicated, since investigation begins sixty years after the events under examination. The reviewed work by the historian consists of two parts: part one provides a long introduction to the history of Lithuanian-Jewish relations and part two presents a collection of articles and documents by Lithuanian authors (from 1941 to present). First of all, the book examines Lithuanian-Jewish relations from the 19th century to the First World War, principally focusing on particularity of the Lithuanian attitude towards Jews. The work next discusses the role of Jews in an interwar independent Lithuania (1919–1940). Sections three and four are the most important, as they explore an intellectual reflection and memory of the Holocaust as well as the attitude of Lithuanian authors – mostly postwar diaspora in North America – towards this tragic period of Lithuania’s history. The book reveals manifestations of bias, inaccuracies and other drawbacks in works on the Holocaust in Lithuania by Lithuanian diaspora and Soviet authors. The work eventually looks at changes and trends in the Holocaust memory after 1990. In the book, the reader will also find original historical documents and the latest insights of research. The book under discussion is undoubtedly a significant contribution to the Lithuanian historiography of the Holocaust.
